The UK's transition to cleaner home heating is gathering pace. But as the heat pump industry grows, there is another question that needs to be asked: how do we protect the engineers delivering it?

The clean-energy revolution needs a safety revolution!

Octopus Energy has become one of the UK's most significant energy businesses. In April 2026, the company announced that it had passed 8 million UK home-energy customers, with around 2,500 new customers joining every day. At the same time, its heat pump business is expanding rapidly.

Octopus recently reported that more than 550,000 people had enquired about an Octopus heat pump over the previous year, while enquiries from customers using oil and LPG had risen by 330% during the first half of 2026 compared with the previous year.

That scale matters.

Every additional heat pump means another installation. Every installation means engineers working with equipment, components and materials. And every manual-handling task presents an opportunity to either reduce risk through better equipment—or leave engineers exposed to unnecessary strain.

For a rapidly expanding industry, safety cannot be an afterthought.

It needs to be engineered into the process.

What does a heat pump installer actually do?

Octopus's process includes surveying the property, assessing pipework and radiator compatibility, designing the heating system and then carrying out the installation. Its heat pump systems can involve the air-source heat pump itself, a compatible hot-water cylinder, appropriately sized radiators, electrical materials and plumbing materials. And within that process are numerous manual-handling activities.

Where safety engineering makes a difference

Consider what happens when a large heating component has to be moved from a vehicle into a customer's property.

The challenge isn't necessarily just the weight.

It can be:

  • awkward dimensions
  • restricted access
  • steps, thresholds or uneven ground

From a problem in the field to a bespoke engineering solution

This is where the collaboration between Octopus Energy and iTip Safety Handles became particularly exciting. Octopus approached the challenge from the perspective of its engineers and the realities of heat pump installation. iTip Safety Handles brought its experience in ergonomic manual-handling aids. Together, the two companies worked on a bespoke solution.

The project has resulted in the development of specialised safety equipment for heat pump installation teams, including a specialist T-bar lifting mechanism for radiator installation and an economically designed trolley to help engineers manoeuvre heat pump tanks into properties.

Crucially, the trolley incorporates Safety Handles.That means the handle isn't simply an accessory added to existing equipment. It forms part of a wider engineered solution designed around the task.

Why ergonomic handles matter

The humble handle can be one of the most overlooked components of manual-handling equipment. Yet where a person places their hands directly affects how they control a load, how their wrists and arms are positioned and how force is transferred through their body.

Safety Handles are designed to allow the user's grip and hand position to work more naturally with the direction of movement. The objective is simple: make the equipment work better with the human body. That can be particularly valuable when equipment is being pushed, pulled, lifted or manoeuvred repeatedly.

The changing expectation around foreseeable risk

This is becoming increasingly important for organisations across industry. The question is no longer simply: "Have we carried out a risk assessment?"

Increasingly, organisations need to consider: "What risks are reasonably foreseeable, and what reasonably practicable controls could we put in place to reduce them?"

That is particularly relevant to manual handling.

If engineers are repeatedly required to manoeuvre heavy or awkward equipment, the risk is foreseeable. If better equipment could materially reduce that risk, the question becomes whether that control is reasonably practicable. This reflects the fundamental principles behind the UK's approach to health and safety: identify hazards, assess the risks and implement appropriate measures to control them.

The emphasis should be on risk reduction at source wherever reasonably practicable.

That means looking beyond PPE and training and asking a more fundamental question: Can we redesign the task or equipment so the risk is reduced in the first place? The Octopus Energy project is an excellent example of that philosophy in practice.
