Why iTip Safety Handles Are Changing the Way We Push, Pull and Tip

Why iTip Safety Handles Are Changing the Way We Push, Pull and Tip

Let’s talk manual handling, if your day involves wheelbarrows, roll cages, wheelie bins or sack trucks, you’ll know how important protecting your back and wrists really is. Or maybe you have not realised the potential long-term problems you could be building up for your back?

That’s exactly why iTip Safety Handles were created.

A manual handling injury can occur whenever lifting, causing a short-term issue, or lead to a long-term problem that can lead to days off or career-shortening injuries.

They’re simple, ergonomic add-ons that attach to wheeled equipment and completely transform the way you move things around. But don't let their simplicity fool you — these little handles are winning awards, impressing the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of the UK government, and making a real difference in workplaces across the UK and beyond.

What Are They?

Think of iTip Safety Handles as the steering wheel your wheelbarrow or roll cage (roll pallet or roll container) always needed.

They clip or screw onto your existing equipment and help keep your wrists in a natural, neutral position. That means better control, less strain, and a huge improvement in comfort, especially when tipping, pushing or steering.

Clip them on when you need something flexible (like with roll cages or wheelie bins), or screw them on for a more permanent setup (like wheelbarrows or heavy-use equipment).

Who’s Using Them?

iTip Safety Handles are already in use in loads of industries:

Retail & Logistics: pallet trolleys, roll cages

Hospitals & Healthcare: wheelchairs, clinical bins, roll cages

Construction & Trade: wheelbarrows, site bins, sack trucks

Gardening & Landscaping: compost bins, barrows

Equestrian & Agriculture: mucking-out bins, stable equipment

Facilities Teams: janitorial or catering trolleys

Basically, anywhere there’s pushing and pulling going on, iTip Safety Handles can help.

The American Museum & Gardens use iTip Safety Handles on many different manual handling pieces of equipment.

Why Do They Matter?

Here’s a stat that might make you wince: 12,600 UK workers report musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) every year from manual handling. That’s a lot of strain, stress, and potentially preventable injuries.

Adding iTip Safety Handles to your equipment improves your outcomes when using the HSE’s RAPP tool (that’s the Risk Assessment for Pushing and Pulling tool), making your workplace safer, more compliant, and a lot more comfortable for your team.

Don’t Just Take Our Word for It

At a recent Health & Safety exhibition, a woman declined to try the iTip Safety Handles on a sack truck, thinking they wouldn’t suit her height. She was sceptical, but gave it a go.

And guess what?
She was delighted. Not only could she use the equipment comfortably, but she also felt included. No more needing to ask taller colleagues for help. She said it had made her feel inadequate in the past, and this simple tool changed that.

Mrs Briant from Wolverhampton was delighted.

We’ve also had glowing feedback from site managers and highways teams. Chris Horne from Sodexo told us:

“I must admit, I was sceptical at first... but now I think they’re fantastic. It makes using the equipment much more natural, flexible, and controlled.”

And Ross Bullerwell, Managing Director of North Yorkshire Highways, said:

“The operators in the depot are fighting to get the barrows fitted with iTip Safety Handles. They’re an easy way to show we care about the welfare of our team.”

Backed by the HSE

We didn’t just dream these up and hope for the best. We worked with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to carry out an official appraisal of iTip Safety Handles.

Here’s what they found:

“Measured reductions in the wrist angles when using sack barrows and wheelbarrows will, in the long term, decrease the risk of musculoskeletal disorders… Eliminating the need to take one or both hands off the wheelbarrow during tipping increases the safety of emptying wheelbarrows.”

The HSE tested iTip Safety Handles as manual handling aids over an eight month period and use it to demonstrate best practice on their training courses.

This research is now part of the HSE best practices training on manual handling and tippable apparatus.
